Checkatrade’s top figure is two and a half times its bottom one. Homebuilding & Renovating quotes £140 to £160 for an installed floor, excluding VAT, and lists materials-only kits from £27.50 in the same article. Bookabuilder warns of a minimum labour charge of £1,500: on a 6 m² floor, that minimum alone works out at £250 per m², above its own bathroom range. Nobody’s lying. They’re not measuring the same thing.

Why do the guides give such different figures?

For three reasons, and none of them is spelt out prominently on the page.

They’re not talking about the same product. A kit sold online, a system a few millimetres thick applied by a professional and a poured self-levelling screed are three materials, three trades and three thicknesses. Putting them under one word, “microcement”, gives a range in which the top end is two and a half times the bottom. Homebuilding & Renovating shows it in a single article: £27.50 per m² for a kit, £140 to £160 for an installed floor.

They don’t count the same work. A microcement cost per m² can describe the finish alone, or the finish plus substrate preparation, tanking under the shower, skirting, the threshold and the final sealer. The first figure looks better. The second is the one you’ll pay. Bookabuilder, for example, lists preparation costs that can come on top: levelling at £15 to £40 per m², crack repair at £10 to £25, tanking for wet rooms at £40 to £80. Check whether VAT is included, too.

They’re not talking about the same area. The type of surface and the total area have the greatest effect on the price. The reason is simple. A team travels to site, protects, prepares and comes back for each coat and for the sealer. The number of working days is almost the same for 6 m² as for 30 m². Spread over 6 m², they weigh heavily.

An average microcement cost per m² adds up these three differences and turns them into one number. That number is accurate and useless.

What really drives the microcement cost per m²?

In order of impact on a real job.

The condition of the substrate. It’s the first cost item and the one the guides quantify least. Sound tiling can be prepared in a day. A tile that sounds hollow, an old cracked floor or a damp wall needs repairing before any finish. Our coating is 2 to 3 mm thick: it hides nothing, it shows everything. What the substrate needs is paid for beforehand, or paid for twice afterwards.

The area and its shape. The fewer square metres there are, the more each one costs. And a square metre of wall behind a wall-hung toilet, with three corners and two pipe runs, doesn’t take the same time as a square metre in the middle of a living room.

Wet areas. A shower isn’t a wall. In our system, the dry area is done with TECNOCEMENTO PLUS® and the wet area with TECNOCEMENTO IMPER®, because standing water and splashes don’t call for the same system. Under the shower there’s also tanking to install and a fall of between 2% and 4% to check. No microcement is waterproof on its own. A bathroom quote that doesn’t mention it is cheaper because something’s missing.

The detailing. Door threshold, the base of the sanitaryware, the junction with the next room, shower screen, corners, taps. That’s where the hours go, and that’s where a job turns out well or badly.

The final protection. The sealer determines stain resistance and maintenance requirements over the next ten years. Two quotes at the same price with two different sealers don’t have the same price.

How much does a microcement bathroom cost?

A bathroom brings together everything that pushes up the cost per m²: a small area, a lot of detailing, two zones that don’t take the same system and, often, existing tiling that has to be checked before it’s covered.

That’s why Bookabuilder puts bathrooms and wet rooms at £120 to £180 per m², above a microcement floor at £100 to £150, and why Checkatrade’s bathroom range goes up to £250. A wet room goes further: the whole floor is a shower, so the whole floor is tanked, and Bookabuilder also lists tanking for wet rooms under preparation costs, at £40 to £80 per m². If you’re quoted a microcement price per m² for a whole bathroom that matches that of a living-room floor, ask what’s been taken out of the quote.

Is microcement cheaper than tiling? Per m², usually not. Bookabuilder’s own comparison puts tiles at £50 to £120 per m² and microcement at £100 to £180. If a quote says otherwise, check whether both include the same preparation. And if you’re weighing it against porcelain that imitates microcement, I’ve compared the two in my article on microcement tiles.

If your bathroom is tiled, I’ve explained what can go wrong and how to avoid it in microcement bathroom disadvantages. And to see the result before talking money, our microcement bathroom gallery features 61 photographs of real projects.

Outdoors, the price depends on the same items, plus two more: the falls in the substrate and the protection applied to sun-exposed surfaces. The guide to outdoor microcement explains them and shows the result.

Why we don’t publish a microcement cost per m²

Because I don’t know your substrate, and anyone who gives you a price without having seen it doesn’t know it either.

We manufacture systems and train the applicators who install them. The price of your job depends on what the applicator finds in your home: the substrate, the area, the wet areas, the details. A figure published here would be wrong for half the people reading it, too high for some and too low for others, and its main purpose would be to draw you in.

There’s one thing I distrust more than a high price: a price that drops with every phone call. If it can still come down, it wasn’t based on anything, or something has just been left out of the quote without anyone telling you. A serious price can be explained line by line. We talk about it plainly in Let’s talk frankly.

The quickest way to get a real figure is to show your project to someone who knows the system: find a TECNOCEMENTO distributor in England.

A good microcement price is neither the lowest nor the highest on the list. It’s the one where you know what it contains. Between £100 and £250, the difference isn’t a margin: it’s a substrate that’s been prepared or not, a shower that’s been tanked or not, and someone who comes back, or doesn’t, when you call.

People ask me whether microcement tiles exist. Before I answer, let me tell you about the first time porcelain tiles beat me.

Years ago I designed a chain of Mediterranean-style restaurants, Tapelia. What tied all the venues together was the floor: a 5 cm concrete slab to which we added pigment and a latex resin, in a cold Mediterranean blue.

I didn’t saw-cut it. I thought the elasticity of the latex would be enough. I laid more than thirty of them all over Spain. I loved them. But they began to crack, as if they had all got angry with me at the same time. Even cracked, I was in love with them, but don’t talk about love to someone who has never known it. They were replaced with grey porcelain tiles, which added nothing to the Mediterranean story and had none of that tender look.

Why a seamless floor?

A fluid that takes the shape of the space.

I have always loved seamless floors. The same floor running from the kitchen to the bathroom and on to the guest room, without changing, turns the house into a single space. The same goes for a studio or a restaurant. Bruce Lee put it better than anyone: “Be water, my friend”. A seamless floor is just that, a fluid that takes the shape of the space.

I built my first houses with concrete floors: cement, aggregate, water and protection. Never less than 8 cm, so it wouldn’t crack. It is poured at the start of the job, pumped from ready-mix trucks sent by the plant, and then it has to survive everything else: MDF boards on top, fierce supervision, wet curing in summer. I saw-cut it with joints of 2.5 mm or more, into bays of 25 m² at most, with no side longer than twice the other, around the columns and at the thresholds. With white cement, the second truckload almost always arrives a different colour. The same thing happens to me when I switch conversations with an artificial intelligence: however thorough the handover, the second truckload can arrive a different colour.

And even so, when the protection came off, one floor or another had cracked. It never bothered me: concrete is a living material and, as the Spanish fashion designer Adolfo Domínguez’s advertising proclaimed, wrinkles are beautiful. But some clients don’t want to move into their new home with a crack.

How was TECNOCEMENTO born?

The question that made me manufacture microcement.

Someone asked me that exact question years ago, and it was what pushed me, as an architect, to develop my own microcement. Around 2005 I started again, in an ordinary commercial unit, applying whatever I could. After a great many failures we hit upon TECNOCEMENTO.

It is almost the same as my concrete: cement, aggregate and water, as in polished concrete floors. What changes is the size: in microcement the aggregate is micronised, mostly silica, finer than beach sand. Where I come from we know what fine sand is worth: in the municipality of Petrer lies the Arenal del Almorxó, a dune that the wind pushed uphill for a very long time until it covered the side of the mountain. Second-rate builders in the fifties nearly finished it off. Today it is a protected natural site.

And it has a few more tricks: additives, which concrete trucks also carry, in smaller proportions, and the resins in component B. It goes on 2 or 3 mm thick and at the end of the job, when nobody is coming through with a wheelbarrow any more. No pumps, no trucks, no protective boards. It is two-component: it contains polymers that give it hardness and others that give it flexibility, because it cannot be a rigid monolith; it moves with its substrate.

It has its own version of the second truckload: if, in the last few buckets, someone overdoes component B or the water, the colour changes. But that risk lies in the applicator’s hands, not in a lorry arriving from a plant. That is why we train every applicator, and when they get their first job approved we give them a stamp with their initials so they can sign their work, like the mason’s marks of the old stonemasons.

Here is a trick. On large areas in houses or commercial premises we do cut joints, but never in the middle of a room: only at door thresholds, with a joint as fine as a hair that you can’t see. You will say it is for expansion. Yes, but hardly. We do it mainly because, after a household accident, we can repair one room without redoing 250 m² of house.

Microcement doesn’t imitate the concrete of polished concrete floors. It is micronised concrete: the same aggregate at another scale, with another thickness and the same beauty.

It is the seamless cement floor I used to make, moved to the end of the job.

Do microcement tiles exist?

Painted and fired, like a vase.

I open any porcelain tile manufacturer’s catalogue and find wood effect, marble effect, stone effect, encaustic effect and concrete effect tiles. Now microcement effect too. I read on the blog of a Spanish tile shop that concrete effect porcelain “will give you 95% of the look with 100% of the peace of mind” (translated from Spanish), and I am stunned. The missing 5% is exactly what you pay for when you choose microcement.

That isn’t a figure of speech. The pattern on those tiles is a digital image, often scanned from a real material, printed with ceramic inks onto the tile before it goes into the kiln. Painted and fired, like a vase. The sellers themselves call it “high-definition digital printing”. Vinyl and laminate floors do the same with a printed decorative film. At Granorte, in Portugal, they showed me how cork is printed to look like wood. It is the height of disguise: one noble material dressed up as another noble material.

It doesn’t bother me that porcelain tile is a manufactured material. Microcement is too. What bothers me is that it is sold for what it imitates rather than for what it is. Wood that isn’t wood, marble that isn’t marble, concrete that isn’t concrete. It was born wanting to be something else, and it grew up that way.

Microcement look tiles exist because microcement exists. Nobody makes porcelain effect microcement.

Microcement vs imitation tilesWhat the catalogue doesn’t tell you.

Is microcement better than tiles?

Microcement tiles: joints, price, installation, large format, repair and footprint.

The joints. “Zero maintenance” only applies to the face of the tile. Between one tile and the next there is a porous grout that gets dirty and, in showers, grows mould (Topps Tiles in Ideal Home). Anyone who has lived with tiles for ten years knows the toothbrush.

The price. The price of a microcement tile in the shop is the price of the material. Add the adhesive, the laying and the grout. If the old floor is taken up, add the demolition and the rubble; if the tiles go on top, add the build-up, the doors and the skirting boards. Microcement goes on over what is there. Ask for fixed-price quotes for the whole job and compare those, not the price per square metre in the catalogue. We talk about price openly in our article Microcement: problems, price and trust. We break the cost per square metre down, line by line, in Microcement cost per m².

The installation. Microcement goes on over what is there, if the substrate allows it. Porcelain tiles can mean taking up the old floor or laying over it: more than a centimetre of build-up, doors to trim, skirting boards to redo. And it is heavy. A 9.4 mm porcelain tile weighs 20.87 kg per square metre, before the adhesive (AENOR GlobalEPD, 2026).

Large format. The porcelain tile that really looks like microcement is the 120×120 cm with a minimal joint, and it is one of the hardest to lay: a very flat substrate, back-buttering as standard, a deformable (C2 S1) or highly deformable (C2 S2) adhesive and a risk of breakage when handling (ANFAPA). This material that “doesn’t depend on the applicator” depends a great deal on the tiler.

Repair. Replacing a 120×120 cm microcement effect tile laid with back-buttering means breaking it out without damaging its neighbours, and finding another one from the same batch and the same shade, years later. Microcement is repaired with microcement, room by room.

The footprint. According to the same environmental declaration, manufacturing one square metre of this porcelain tile emits 14.4 kg of CO2 equivalent. Add the rubble from the old floor that comes out.

Bruce Lee completed his idea of water: “Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless, like water”. A tile has a shape: it is a rectangle, and anything that isn’t a rectangle means cutting it. A curve, a staircase, a built-in bench, a basin: cuts, mitres and trims. Microcement has no shape of its own. It runs from the floor to the wall and from the wall to the furniture without changing material. It takes the shape of the space, like water.

If it is microcement you have fallen for, choose microcement. A photo of microcement lasts a long time, but it is still a photo.

I’ll go question by question, in the order people ask them. When I give a figure, I cite the source. When it depends on your job, I explain what it depends on instead of making it up.

01 · What is microcement and what is it used for?

A layer two to three millimetres thick, over what you already have.

Microcement is a seamless cement-based coating. It’s applied by hand, in thin coats, over an existing substrate: tiles, screed, plaster, plasterboard. The total thickness is around 2–3 mm. It isn’t laid like conventional flooring; it’s spread like a thin skin.

It’s used for what you see in these photographs: floors, walls, bathrooms, kitchens, stairs, outdoor areas, pools, furniture. Its value lies in continuity. A single material runs across the floor, up the wall and into the shower without a joint.

What it isn’t: it isn’t a structural material, it doesn’t level an uneven floor and it isn’t waterproof on its own. A shower needs tanking underneath and a fall of between 2% and 4%. The microcement goes over it.

Ours is two-component: a mortar and a resin that are mixed on site. Each use has its own system: TECNOCEMENTO PLUS for interior floors and walls, TECNOCEMENTO IMPER for wet areas, and six more in the full range of systems.

Two millimetres won’t fix a poor substrate. They’ll reveal it.

02 · How long does a microcement floor last?

The coating has no expiry date. The sealer does.

Anyone who quotes a lifespan without seeing the job isn’t being honest. A microcement floor has two separate lifespans.

The first is the coating itself: the two millimetres of material. If the substrate is sound and stable, it’ll last as long as the substrate. Some of our earliest floors are still in use, and it isn’t the microcement that has aged.

The second is the sealer: the clear protective coat on top that bears the wear, the spills and the chair scuffs. It wears out and needs renewing. How often depends on foot traffic and the product; each system’s maintenance guide sets this out, and an applicator can advise once they’ve seen how the floor is used.

What shortens a floor’s life, in order of how often we’ve seen it: a substrate that cracks and takes the microcement with it; moisture coming up through the substrate; a sealer that hasn’t been renewed; and installation by an untrained applicator.

The useful question isn’t ‘how many years does it last?’ but ‘what’s underneath?’

03 · What are the disadvantages of microcement flooring?

Six things a salesperson won’t tell you on day one.

It cracks if the substrate cracks. It’s the complaint people search for most, and the most justified. Microcement doesn’t crack on its own: it follows cracks in the substrate. That’s why assessing the substrate matters more than any other part of the job, although it’s the part you see least.

It depends on who applies it. It’s a skilled trade, not an off-the-shelf product. The same material in different hands produces different floors. We train our applicators because the system doesn’t work without skilled workmanship.

It can’t be repaired invisibly. A patch repair on a seamless, hand-applied finish shows. An area can be redone, but you won’t make the whole floor look untouched again. That’s what sets it apart from a tile, which can simply be replaced.

The sealer needs maintaining. Without periodic resealing, it stains. The sealer provides water and stain resistance; microcement alone doesn’t.

It has natural variation. Tonal variation, trowel marks and clouding aren’t defects; they’re inherent in the material. If you want the uniformity of a factory-made tile, this isn’t it.

It costs more than a basic tile. We’ll come to that in the fifth question. The disadvantage is simple: installed microcement costs more per square metre than standard porcelain tiling.

All of this has to be resolved before work starts. Afterwards is too late.

04 · What colours does microcement come in?

Fifty-seven shades on the chart. None will look the same in your home.

As at 29 September 2026, our colour chart contains 57 shades in 9 ranges: Basic Colour, Basic Grey, Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Kasbah, Vintage and Metallic. Greys are requested most; earth tones and off-whites are growing fastest.

What the chart doesn’t tell you. The final colour of a microcement finish is determined by three things besides the pigment: the sealer, which darkens it and alters the sheen depending on whether it’s matt or satin; the applicator’s hand, which distributes the pigment with each pass; and the light in the room. You can’t choose from an on-screen sample. A physical sample in your home, in your light, is what works.

You don’t choose a colour from a catalogue. You choose it with a sample in your hand.

05 · How much does a microcement floor cost per m²?

UK guides quote £100 to £180 per m². That range is accurate and useless.

Two UK sources, read on 20 October 2026, give the market figures. Bookabuilder puts installed microcement at £100 to £150/m² on floors and £120 to £180/m² in bathrooms and wet rooms. Homebuilding & Renovating quotes kits from £29.20/m², but that’s for materials only, before anyone has picked up a trowel. The numbers are theirs, not mine.

A range like that doesn’t help you decide. Let me explain what drives it, from a manufacturer’s point of view.

The substrate. It’s the first cost factor and the one the guides mention least. Sound tiling can be prepared in a day. Hollow-sounding tiles, cracked screed or damp walls must be dealt with first, or you’ll pay twice later.

The area and its shape. A team has to travel to site, protect the space, prepare the substrate and come back for each coat and for the sealer. That takes almost as many days for 8 m² as for 40. Spread over 8 m², the cost per square metre rises sharply.

Wet areas. A shower isn’t just another wall: it needs tanking, the correct fall and a different system. A bathroom quote at the price of a living room is a quote with something missing.

The sealer. Two quotes at the same price but with different sealers aren’t equivalent. The sealer determines how the floor performs over the next ten years.

We don’t publish our own price per square metre. It isn’t commercial coyness: any figure given without seeing the job would be wrong for half the people reading it. What I can tell you is what every quote should include if you’re to compare like with like:

The condition of the substrate: what has been checked and which repairs are included.

The name of the system and the sealer, area by area.

The number of coats and the total thickness.

The proposed shower build-up, including tanking and falls, if there is one.

Who takes responsibility afterwards, and how quickly they respond.

A price that drops every time you call was never a price.

You look for information about microcement problems and end up imagining a refurbishment that has to be done all over again.

They seem quiet, yet have an enormous presence. They need neither pattern, joints nor repetition to make themselves felt. Precisely because the individual piece disappears, the surface emerges.

One element running through the floor plan

Conventional flooring tends to constantly explain how it is built. Each joint measures the room again. Each piece establishes a scale. Each change in format introduces another interruption.

Microcement flooring works differently.

By reducing these visual divisions, a single surface can extend through the kitchen, living room, corridor or bedroom, establishing a relationship between them that did not previously exist.

This does not mean the rooms disappear. It means they no longer need different flooring to show that they are different.

The kitchen remains a kitchen. The living room remains a living room. But both can belong to the same material territory.

The floor unifies. Architecture differentiates.

Continuity does not eliminate uses: it allows dining, living and circulation areas to belong to the same material field.

The silent conquest of space

Microcement starts at one point and seems to want to keep going.

It crosses a doorway.

It turns a corner.

It reaches a staircase.

It approaches a wall.

And suddenly we discover that the boundary between one room and another was no longer necessarily in the floor.

Visually, it behaves like a fluid. Not because it is poured — that is not how it is applied — but because its continuity seems to follow a similar logic: advancing, enveloping, finding the next plane, occupying the interval until separate surfaces become a single field.

It is a fluid at rest: solid matter that retains, in our perception, the memory of movement.

The floor seems to have flowed before hardening. It moves from one room to another without asking permission, goes around a piece of furniture, reaches a step and continues. Where a tile ends, microcement seems to wonder what comes next.

It does not occupy rooms. It builds territory.

Your browser cannot play this video.
“Be water, my friend”. The reference works here as a perceptual analogy, not a construction method: microcement is not poured like water, but its continuity can be read as a material that finds a way to keep going.

Continuity does not mean an absence of limits

The image of a fluid is useful, but it too has a limit. Microcement’s visual continuity does not justify ignoring the building’s movements or joints that must be respected for technical reasons.

A substrate may require structural joints, expansion joints or specific solutions at certain junctions. Covering them indiscriminately does not make the floor more continuous. It may simply make it more vulnerable.

At TECNOCEMENTO®, we therefore distinguish between visual continuity and construction continuity.

The former can extend extraordinarily far.

The latter must always respond to what happens beneath.

The floor eventually reveals what the substrate tries to hide.

When the floor, vertical planes and built elements share the same material, continuity is no longer solely horizontal.

A continuous material that is never identical

A microcement floor can extend for tens of metres without being exactly the same at every centimetre.

And that accounts for much of its character.

Manual application can leave subtle mottling, movement, variations in shade or slight differences in texture. We are not talking about defects, but the characteristic traces of a worked material.

That is why we defend an idea that may seem contradictory:

Imperfection is part of the system.

But only up to a point.

A slight variation in shade is one thing. A stain is another. Seeing the movement of the trowel is one thing. Poor workmanship is another. A living surface is one thing. An active crack is another.

Imperfection belongs to the material.

Shoddy workmanship does not.

Continuity can also meet the demands of intensive use: foot traffic, grazing light and dark surfaces make every workmanship decision visible.

Continuity also needs strength

The floor is probably where microcement has to prove the most things at once.

Looking attractive is not enough.

There are footsteps. Moving chairs. Furniture. Cleaning. Sand. Impacts. Water. Everyday use.

So when we talk about microcement flooring, we are not just talking about a continuous aesthetic. We mean a system in which the substrate, preparation, microcement layers, surface protection and intended use must be compatible.

The final appearance may seem extremely simple.

The solution that maintains that simplicity is not.

Which system to choose for a microcement floor

Colour does not determine the system: intended use, mechanical demands, contact with water and the condition of the substrate do. These are the three TECNOCEMENTO® systems we most frequently use for flooring, and the projects where you can see them applied.

Medium pedestrian traffic

Tecnocemento Plus®

Cement and acrylic resins in a 2–3 mm layer, over previously corrected terrazzo, tiles or self-levelling screeds. All systems are applied without demolishing the existing flooring, adapting it to achieve the necessary flatness. If you are looking for the price of microcement flooring per m², it depends on the system, substrate and area: we explain it plainly in Let’s talk frankly.

A single surface can cross very different zones without forcing them to look alike. Continuity unifies; furniture, light and use introduce the differences.

The floor begins before the microcement appears

The most important decision about a microcement floor probably remains completely hidden once the work is finished.

It is the substrate.

Its stability, flatness, adhesion, moisture, cracks and junctions determine how the coating will subsequently perform.

That is why at TECNOCEMENTO® we prefer to start by discussing what nobody will ultimately see. It may be less appealing than choosing a colour. But it is considerably more important.

A good finish applied to an unsuitable substrate is still a well-finished problem.

Colour never comes alone

On an extensive surface, colour takes on a different intensity.

A small sample allows you to choose a shade.

A whole floor allows you to understand it.

Natural light, orientation, shadows, wood, stone, furniture and the size of the room continually change how it is perceived.

That is why grey is never simply grey. It can become cooler in north light, warmer beside wood, disappear under diffuse lighting or acquire an enormous presence in grazing light.

On a continuous floor, colour does not occupy a piece: it occupies the space.

When the floor disappears

A floor can constantly draw attention to itself.

Or it can do something much harder.

It can step back.

Not disappear physically, but stop competing with what happens above it.

At TECNOCEMENTO®, this moment particularly interests us: when the material has run through the floor plan, connected the rooms and absorbed many of the visual interruptions; when furniture, light, people and architecture begin to take centre stage.

Then comes the final paradox:

The floor conquers the space precisely when it stops claiming it for itself.

And perhaps that is the best definition of a good microcement floor: a single surface capable of flowing through architecture until we stop looking at the flooring and start perceiving the space.

Tomás Amat

Architect · TECNOCEMENTO®

From material to project

If this way of understanding flooring fits your project, these are some useful next steps.

TECNOCEMENTO®
Discover the brand

Application
Applicators and courses

Professional network
Find a distributor

Microcement in bathrooms can develop cracks, delamination, leaks, stains or wear when the substrate, the chosen system, the design or the workmanship does not suit the conditions of use. Preventing these problems means checking the base, resolving junctions and selecting an appropriate solution for each area.

It takes skilled workmanship, or an expert to lend a hand — and that is where we come in.

Visual continuity, a variety of finishes and the possibility of retaining certain existing coverings explain the interest in microcement bathrooms and cloakrooms. But a wall beside a basin and a shower floor are not subjected to the same demands. Nor can a surface that appears sound reveal the condition of the layers underneath.

I am Tomás Amat, architect and CEO of TECNOCEMENTO®. Since 2009, I have spent seventeen years solving real application problems. That experience comes at a cost: we have paid for our mistakes and had to learn from them.

That is one of our strengths: we know about difficulties that a photograph of a finished bathroom does not show. We have learnt to pay attention to what lies underneath, to ask questions before covering it and to recognise when a solution needs more than a good finish.

That is why I want to discuss the disadvantages of microcement clearly. To explain what can go wrong, the reasons behind it and what we should check to reduce the risk. Anyone thinking about renovating a bathroom needs this information before choosing a colour or accepting a quotation.

Seventeen years of experience do not allow us to promise that there will never be problems. They do allow us to approach each job with what we have learnt from solving them.

Walls and floors meet different demands: the same material, two finishing systems.

Where do microcement bathroom problems come from?

There are four key factors in achieving a good microcement finish and enjoying it for years.

The first is the product. At TECNOCEMENTO®, the quality of what we manufacture is our responsibility: selecting raw materials, controlling production and testing performance. This work allows the right system to be chosen for each use.

The second is the applicator. Their skill, care and attention to detail are decisive. A properly executed job carries a responsibility: preparing the surface, respecting waiting times, resolving junctions and taking care over the finish. The result also depends on the sensitivity and judgement of the person working with the material.

The third deserves, in our experience, the most attention: the supporting base. I mean the substrate and the layers that will receive our application. Their condition affects everything we build on top.

A deteriorated, unstable or inadequately prepared base can compromise the whole system. We therefore need to know what is underneath, check its condition and put it right before starting. This part of the work will be hidden, but it demands as much care as the surface we will eventually see.

The fourth is use. A thin continuous coating is not stone: abrasives, impacts, hair dyes or cosmetics left to dry on the surface, and products not approved for the sealer leave their mark. Choosing microcement for a bathroom means accepting responsible use in exchange for continuity and design.

Those troublesome cracks — and delamination: why they happen

The essential requirement is to apply it to a strong, stable and dry surface. A base with existing cracks does not necessarily have to be rejected: we must assess their cause and repair them properly before coating it. When our material is applied, the supporting layers must be firmly bonded and free of unresolved defects such as cracks, flaking, delamination or significant unevenness.

The most frequent causes of cracking are shrinkage in recently applied mortar or screed that has not finished drying, untreated substrate joints — between plasterboard sheets, between a partition and a floor slab, or between tiling and screed — and differential movement between different materials in the same plane. Covering an active crack is scheduling its return.

Delamination follows a different logic. It occurs when the bond between layers fails: a dusty substrate or traces of plaster, paint or grease; a primer or bonding agent unsuitable for the material; moisture trapped in the base exerting pressure from within; or old tiling with tiles that were already hollow underneath. Check beforehand, not afterwards: tap to identify hollow areas, measure substrate moisture and carry out an adhesion test on a small area. These three checks take half an hour and help avoid having to redo the work.

To address these issues, we have repair, smoothing and levelling mortars, as well as consolidants. Their selection and combination depend on the condition of the substrate. At TECNOCEMENTO®, we have developed our own criteria for this preparation.

Do not worry if the substrate is not in good condition: repair it effectively!

Preparing supporting bases properly is an essential part of the application. And, if you need help, we will guide you through the checks and preparation your substrate requires.

Can microcement be applied over tiles without removing them?

Keeping the tiles is an option that must be decided after checking their condition and the compatibility of the system. The phrase “direct application” is incomplete if it suggests that simply coating the surface as it stands is enough.

Keeping an existing floor and coating the rest is a decision made tile by tile, not by default.

You need to assess the adhesion of the tiles, damaged areas, joints, residues that could interfere with bonding and the evenness of the surface. Preparation must respond to those conditions. That is why we do not treat it as an identical operation in every bathroom.

Junctions also need to be considered. The thickness of the complete solution, including the necessary preparation, affects its relationship with doors, sanitary fittings, shower screens and adjacent floors. A figure referring only to the final coating does not describe the whole intervention.

Avoiding tile removal can reduce some demolition work. That advantage makes sense when keeping the tiles is technically appropriate. If problems require access to services or replacement of part of the base, retaining every tile should not become a non-negotiable condition.

A clearly defined renovation proposal should explain what will be retained, what will be repaired and what falls outside the initial quotation. The owner then knows what they are commissioning and how defects discovered during preparation will be addressed. Working over an existing finish becomes a justified decision.

What does a shower need to prevent leaks?

A shower requires water protection, drainage and junctions to be resolved together. The choice of coating must form part of that complete solution.

Floor, wall, drain and tap penetrations: the four points that determine whether a shower leaks.

The first question we suggest answering is the function of each component: substrate preparation, the proposed waterproofing, the finish and surface protection. The exact build-up depends on the system. It is not accurate to say that all microcements are waterproof in themselves, nor to rule out a specific solution incorporating that function.

An important point: our products and, in general, good microcements perform very well against positive-side moisture, coming from above towards the surface, such as shower water on the coating.

In our range, TECNOCEMENTO IMPER® is presented as a system for coating and waterproofing bathroom floors and walls, with applications on shower trays, adjacent walls and basins. It is a cement and resin coating two to three millimetres thick, protected with FORTE PLUS sealer. This specification must be developed through the documentation relevant to the work, including junctions and conditions for bringing it into use.

However, negative-side moisture, rising from below because of ground moisture and an inadequately waterproofed substrate, is devastating. There is no remedy unless the surface first receives a specific barrier treatment on the substrate: ordinary bituminous paint or a general-purpose waterproofing mortar will not do.

Drainage deserves attention from the design stage. Its position, the type of drain and the floor geometry must allow proper discharge. The fall must be specified for that configuration; it cannot be deduced from a photograph or resolved through a generic recommendation for every shower. A tray without sufficient fall retains water, and retained water is the main cause of staining and sealer degradation.

Our criterion is a fall of between 2% and 4% towards the drain. Below 2%, water stagnates; above 4%, the slope is noticeable underfoot. This is decided before forming the tray, not after coating it.

The same attention is needed for floor-to-wall junctions, corners and tap penetrations. These are places where materials, planes and services meet. The proposed solution and its compatibility with the system must be understood, including where a shower screen or its fixings will be installed later.

A useful tip: the masonry or plasterboard wall should rest over the shower tray, never butt against it or sit behind it. This solves much more than we might expect.

Concept sketch, not to scale: the wall rests over the tray so water from the wall falls inside it, not onto the joint.

My recommendation for the shower tray

I would not make the shower tray in microcement.

And I say that despite having a suitable product. IMPER is specified for shower trays. But the tray is where everything comes together: water can stagnate, the fall is critical, the drain is a discontinuity and the sealer is subjected to daily use. It is the bathroom area with the least margin for error.

If you still want a microcement tray, doing so means accepting responsible use: no abrasives, no severe impacts, no pooled hair dye and, most importantly, annual maintenance that takes an hour and promises complete happiness.

That annual hour is a condition worth knowing before you choose. If you do not intend to carry out this maintenance, I recommend making the tray from another material and using microcement in the rest of the bathroom.

Our polyurethane varnish sealers, water-based or solvent-based and applied with a roller, improve the product’s resistance. In particular, we have one unlike anything you have seen: we call it “the marvel”.

Does it slip, stain or wear? Finish and maintenance

Slip resistance? Very simple: glass microspheres in the optimum proportions in the top coats. Our finish with microspheres achieves Class 3 under the classification stated in its test report. Ask the applicator for that document and check the test method, conditions and finishing system it refers to: a class number alone is not enough to select a surface. The requirements applicable to the use and location of the project must also be checked.

Stains? Addressed with our Plus Antimanchas finish, “the marvel”. It is the latest development of our polyurethane varnish, with the highest properties of hardness, waterproofing and resistance: single-component, solvent-free (100% solids), odourless and free of volatile organic compounds, with high chemical resistance to domestic products and abrasives — red wine, oil, ketchup, red berries, mustard, coffee, alcohol, bleach and hydrochloric acid — increased surface resistance and minimal change to the appearance of Tecnocemento, with a matt finish. On IMPER, cleaning permits bleach, ammonia and alcohol, without waxes; that compatibility belongs to the installed system and must not be applied to a different one.

Does it wear out? We will wear out first, and that is still a long way off. Wear means relating the choice to traffic and use: a guest cloakroom and a family’s main bathroom are not the same situation.

Vertical face, countertop and basin interior: three different exposures to water under the same colour.

For basins and countertops, it is worth specifying which surfaces will be coated and what contact they will have with water or other products. A vertical face, a countertop and the inside of a basin should not be treated as a single situation simply because they share a colour: the interior receives standing water, soap and limescale every day and places the greatest demands on the sealer.

There is an aesthetic decision too. Microcement can show variations and marks that are characteristic of its finish. We therefore recommend examining a representative sample before work starts and agreeing which variations are acceptable. Mistaking an expected characteristic for a defect afterwards creates a disagreement that could have been avoided.

Colour and sheen should be chosen alongside texture, lighting and cleaning requirements. The bathroom’s appearance then reflects a considered selection, with shared expectations between owner and applicator.

Choose colour together with the intended texture, light and cleaning routine, rather than as the starting point.

Maintenance: an hour’s work does not mean immediate use

An hour’s work does not mean that the shower can be used immediately. After renewing the protection, the waiting time specified for the sealer and the application conditions must be respected. The applicator should state separately how long the work will take and when the surface can come into contact with water again.

Maintenance and bringing the surface into use must follow the instructions for the installed system, not only in the shower but also on walls, floors, countertops and basins. We may not be used to it, but just as we change the filters and oil in our cars to make them last longer, floors and other elements in our homes also need maintenance. There is no single waiting period or universal sealer renewal interval for every microcement; in areas directly exposed to water, our criterion is an annual inspection.

At handover, a distinction should be made between drying between coats, curing and the conditions for using the room again. A surface that looks dry does not allow you to establish by observation when it can receive water, cleaning or its intended use.

The programme should take these periods into account from the quotation stage. If this is a home’s only bathroom, knowing when the basin and shower can be used has practical consequences. The timings must come from the relevant documentation and account for the actual application conditions.

Cleaning also requires specific instructions. The owner needs to know which products can be used, how to use them and which are incompatible. It is worth consulting our maintenance products when choosing the finish; a general recommendation that ignores the chosen finish is not enough.

For the sealer, it is useful to know which signs call for an inspection and who should assess whether work is needed. Saying it must be reapplied “every few years” without identifying the product, use and condition creates an unfounded maintenance expectation.

We believe handover should include the names of the system and finish, their care instructions and a contact for reporting problems. With this information, looking after the surface no longer depends on advice found for products that may be different.

What should you check before choosing the system and bringing it into use?

The choice is reasonable when the substrate can be properly prepared, a system is specified for the intended use, and the application and maintenance are clearly defined.

Someone who chooses microcement for its appearance and accepts that small imperfections are part of the system is choosing a coating designed to last, with the maintenance appropriate to the system applied.

Before starting, five questions should be answerable. Which base will be retained and how will it be prepared? How will areas exposed to water be addressed, including moisture that may rise through the substrate? What performance will each finish provide? When can the bathroom be used? And what care will it need, with permitted and prohibited products stated in writing?

The answers should form part of the proposal, rather than being left unresolved until the end.

It is also worth agreeing how any problem will be handled: who will inspect it, what documentation will be kept and what an eventual repair would cover. This is not about assuming that problems will arise, but about defining responsibility for the work.

Once these conditions have been resolved, visual continuity and design possibilities can be assessed with sound judgement. Choosing microcement colours will then be a decision integrated with the rest of the bathroom.

For me, a well-planned renovation starts with being able to explain these decisions. That is the value of experience: turning the problems we have solved into more demanding criteria for the next job.

High Transit anti-scratch resistance

One of the things we usually ask of a floor if we have pets is that it should be resistant to scratches from their claws. Especially if our pets are very nervous and spend all their time moving from one side of the house to the other.
That is why at Tecnocemento we have created the High Tranist system, specifically for high traffic areas and ideal for homes with pets, as it has a mechanical resistance coefficient of maximum hardness, without having to abandon the elegant aesthetics that microcement floors provide.

Easy to clean floors

We are not going to fool ourselves, we love our pets, but they shed a lot of hair (especially at certain times of the year), drool, mark their territory and tend to do their business wherever they please (especially if they are puppies). That’s why having a floor that can withstand the dampness of the mop or the rush of the hoover can be essential.

In microcement you will find the best ally as it is a floor that, due to its material and finish, is resistant to damp. In addition, as there are no joints, you no longer have to worry about the dirt that tends to accumulate in them. You will even make it much easier for the robot hoover.

At Tecnocemento we have our “Forte Plus” finish protector that allows the floor to be cleaned with any product, no matter how abrasive it is, and without the need to apply any added protection on it.

The beauty of microcement

What makes microcement the best flooring for your pet is that it meets the cleaning and resistance requirements you want without having to sacrifice the beauty of the floor.

In addition, it combines very well with other materials such as wood, marble or stone, and can be used to cover walls, shower trays and any type of furniture.

However, let’s not fool ourselves, the quality of the final result lies in the application. That is why at Tecnocemento we have been training our applicators for more than 15 years to achieve the best results.

Walking barefoot has many advantages for your health, not only physical but also mental. Having a microcement floor in your home will help you to enhance this wellbeing, as there are many benefits of walking barefoot on microcement.

Benefits of barefoot walking for physical and mental health

It relieves pressure and stimulates the muscles.

It is a natural anxiolytic.

Enhances cognitive development.

Helps to improve circulation.

Reduces the risk of back pain.

Why walk barefoot on microcement?

Specialists advise children, adults and the elderly to walk barefoot, but always in a safe environment (i.e. a place where we cannot cut ourselves, or catch any kind of fungus and/or infection).

One of the safest environments in which to do this is our home. However, many people are reluctant to walk barefoot because of the type of floor they have in their home, as it can be cold, it doesn’t have a pleasant feel (either because of the joints or the type of material), it gets marked and is difficult to clean, etc.

And with all this, we are losing, physically and mentally, all the benefits of walking barefoot, however the microcement is a decorative coating that:

It has a pleasant temperature so you will not feel cold when your bare feet come into contact with the floor.

It has no joints and is completely smooth, making microcement flooring not only pleasant to the touch, but also safe. There is no chance of injury.

It is super easy to clean so you won’t have to worry about your children playing barefoot.

It can be installed both indoors and outdoors, so you can start walking in your living room, continue on your terrace and finish in your garden.

It is 100% waterproof, perfect for areas such as kitchens and bathrooms. You’ll know what it’s like to take your shoes off at the entrance and never have to put them back on again.

It can be installed on almost any type of surface, thus avoiding the inconvenience of building work.

If you want to install microcement in your home, at TECNOCEMENTO we have the most innovative systems and great professionals with more than 15 years of experience. Contact us and we will inform you without obligation.
